SMART Health-Related Goals: Set One Today

  • Posted by: Yvonne Longmatey

So quickly, the first month of the year is ending. You have set many goals. Did you include your health? Your health is your most valuable asset. Every aspect of your life heavily depends on it. However, it is very easy to overlook this area of your life as you pursue all other things. This year, make an effort to take care of your health, and it will in turn take care of you when you need it most. Be intentional in investing in your health.

Today, pause and review the goals you have made for the year. Did you include a health-related goal? Try to set one now, if you have not already done so. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start out with one, and try to keep it very simple. Let your health-related goal be relevant to your general wellness. Set a goal for which you can feasibly make plans to achieve. Set a SMART health-related goal today. Let your set goal be Specific (S), Measurable (M), Achievable (A), Relevant (R), and Time-sensitive (T). If your goal is missing any aspect of a SMART health-related goal, adjust to include the missing aspect.

Compare these two goals:

Goal # 1: “I will go to the gym every day this year”

Goal # 2: “I will exercise 15 minutes every other day this year, until March”

Even if you have already bought a gym membership pass, the second goal is different and more achievable than the first. It meets all the checks of our SMART health-related goal. With the second goal, you will soon realize that even on a day when you cannot make it to the gym, you will explore smart ways to obtain your 15 minutes of exercise. You have clearly spelt out your desire. This will motivate you to achieve it, whatever it takes. Additionally, because the goal is within reach, some days you will go way beyond and feel pumped up. You will consistently get your minimum of 15 minutes of exercise, every other day. Personalize your goal. Your goal should be personally achievable and at the same time be one that would challenge you beyond your comfort zone. Finally, March is not too far off, and that will energize you to keep up with progress.

With this discussion in mind, challenge yourself to set a single SMART Health-related goal now. Write this goal on a card and place it visibly in a place where you will see it daily. You’ll be amazed at how much this action will positively influence your health this year.

Have a blessed and very prosperous New Year. May your health see enhancement.
